In March, owners of the fourth-generation Apple TV noticed that one app — Disney Infinity 3.0 — had disappeared with no explanation. Yesterday, Disney announced that it is closing down the video game business altogether due to poor financial performance.
Disney Infinity hasn’t been around all that long, having just launched in 2013 as a hybrid game system consisting of software and physical collectibles from various Disney franchises. The last major release was Disney Infinity 3.0, which introduced characters from the Disney-Pixar film “Inside Out”, the Star Wars universe, and the Marvel superhero franchises.
The Apple TV version of Disney Infinity 3.0 launched last November, and fans could purchase a starter kit containing the fourth-generation Apple TV, a SteelSeries Nimbus game controller, and a number of character collectibles. Apparently, the company will still release three new characters from “Alice Through The Looking Glass” this month, as well as a “Finding Dory Play Set” in June. All products after that have been canceled.
