Qube crowdfunding shows demand for low-cost Wi-Fi smart bulbs

Philips Hue light bulbs are amazing — you can get them to produce just about any color, controlled from your iPhone. But besides being expensive, they also require a hub to be able to talk to your device. Qube is an Indiegogo project with 27 days to go that seeks to bring the price of Wi-Fi connected LED bulbs down to a reasonable amount — $19 per bulb — and make it all work without the need for a hub.

The campaign launched last Thursday and is now over 200% funded. In addition to the low cost and Wi-Fi, the Qube has Bluetooth Low Energy and Bluetooth Smart built in so that just being near the bulbs with a Bluetooth device can turn on a light. That capability also makes it possible for Qube bulbs to shut off automatically when they don’t detect people in the house.

The team promises IFTTT compatibility, and also plans to have an Apple Watch app to control the lights by next August. You can check out the entire campaign and join in on the crowdfunding fun today.
