Wistron nearing a land deal in India to beef up its Apple assembly lines

Wistron, Apple’s primary assembler in India, is close to finalizing a land deal in India’s tech hub of Bengaluru with the company likely to invest about $157 million to develop the site, reports Reuters, quoting two unnamed government officials.

ICT Service Management Solutions, Wistron’s unit that assembles Apple’s low-cost iPhone SE in India, has purportedly been scouting for some 100 acres in and around Bengaluru, capital of the southern Indian state of Karnataka. Wistron is likely to use at least a part of this land to set up new assembly lines for Apple, notes Reuters.

Apple has set its sights on the growing Indian market by pushing for shipments of the smartphone model with the goal of doubling the iPhone’s market share in the country over the next five years. Focus Taiwan reported in August 2017 that the tech giant signed up Wistron to assemble the new iPhone SEs after the firm started to produce the model in India in May, targeting markets around the world.
