Two new MacBook Air models, upgraded 13-inch MacBook Pro rumored to pack an M3 chip

9to5Mac says it’s confirmed via independent sources that Apple is working on a new generation MacBook Air in two different sizes —13-inch and 15-inch — as well as a new 13-inch MacBook Pro.

The report says all will be powered by an M3 processor. 9to5Mac says it’s uncertain at this point when Apple plans to introduce the new laptops. However, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman thinks that at least the new MacBook Air will be introduced at this summer’s Worldwide Developer Conference. Since both the 13-inch and 15-inch models will feature the M3 chip, it seems unlikely that Apple will announce new MacBooks in the first half of the year, notes 9to5Mac

However, display analyst Ross Young said in a tweet earlier today that the rumored 15-inch MacBook Air is still on track to launch next month.

The upcoming M3 chips will, of course, be better-performing upgrades to the existing M2 chips. Gurman has said those upgraded chip will be built on a new 3nm manufacturing process, likely by Apple’s manufacturing partner, TSMC.

In fact, according to TSMC’s claims, the smaller chip design would deliver a significant leap in performance (roughly 15%) while consuming less power (roughly 30%) compared to the current generation. And The Information reports that the M3 chip could feature up to four dies, enabling it to support up to 40 compute cores.
