Tim Cook is present for the expansion of Apple’s Ireland campus

Apple CEO Tim Cook is in Cork, Ireland, where he was on hand for the opening of an expansion to the company’s campus in Hollyhill, reports the Evening Echo. The tech giant has been based in Cork for over 35 years and now directly employs 6,000 people here.

Apple’s Irish team has doubled in size over the last five years and includes over 80 different nationalities, notes the Evening Echo.

Since 2012, the Cupertino, California-based company — Cork’s largest private employer — has invested nearly €220 million to develop the Hollyhill campus and have just expanded again with a new building that provides space for 1,400 employees. Cork is also home of Apple’s only self-owned factory, which builds custom-ordered iMacs for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

The company had plans to build a $1 billion Irish data center. However, due to delays in the approval process, Apple announced in May that it was ditching the plan.
