Rumor: Apple plans to release an iPhone with a microLED display

Apple plans to release an iPhone with a microLED display in the future, according to a report from DigiTimes (a subscription is required to read the article).

From the report: Starting with Apple Watch, Apple plans to further introduce microLED display to iPhone and iPad. Some sources from IT industry forecast that Apple Watch Ultra will no longer use existing OLED display by end-2024 or 2025 as it will be replaced by Apple’s self-developed microLED display.

Along with OLEDs, microLEDs are primarily aimed at small, low-energy devices such as smartwatches and smartphones. However, unlike OLED, microLED is based on conventional GaN LED technology, which offers higher total brightness than OLED produces. It also doesn’t suffer from the shorter lifetimes of OLED.
