Rumor: Apple Glasses pricing will start at $499

Reliable Apple leader Jon Prosser reports that Apple’s upcoming augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR) glasses (which will resemble everyday glasses in design) and will indeed be dubbed “Apple Glasses” with pricing starting at US$499.

You’ll be able to order prescription lens for an extra charge. Prosser says that  displays in both lenses will respond to gestures and probably have wireless charging.

As expected, the Apple Glasses will depend on a paired iPhone, similar to the original Apple Watch. Prosser says that an early prototype featured LiDAR (which debuted in this year’s iPad Pro updates), and that Apple is also considering a more traditional head-mounted display (HMD) akin to the Oculus Quest

Prosser adds that the original plan was to debut the Apple Glasses this fall, but COVID-19 restrictions on in-person gatherings could push back the announcement to a March 2021 event with a late 2021 or early 2022 release date.

The Sellers Research Group (that’s me) thinks Prosser is 100% correct in this predictions. I also think we’ll see the Apple Glasses be available before the 2021 holiday season. That said, if the Apple Glasses are a big hit, I don’t expect Apple to debut a Quest-like device.
