Apple’s 2020 iPhone line-up may support a new Wi-Fi standard known as IEEE 802.11ay that promises to deliver faster and longer range W-Fi networks, according to the Japanese blog MacOtakara. It’s still in the draft phase, but is expected to be finalized by the ned of the year.
It’s the follow-up of IEEE 802.11ad, quadrupling the bandwidth and adding MIMO up to four streams. It will be the second WiGig standard.
MIMO is a wireless technology that uses multiple transmitters and receivers to transfer more data at the same time. WiGig, alternatively known as 60GHz Wi-Fi, refers to a set of 60 GHz wireless network protocols. It includes the current IEEE 802.11ad standard and IEEE 802.11ay.
