Review and Giveaway: Satechi Type-C 75W Multiport Travel Charger

Tech-savvy travelers need power, and they need it quickly so their devices don’t run out of power. Today we’re looking at the new Satechi Type-C 75W Multiport Travel Charger ($59.99 on Amazon, affiliate link), a compact travel charger that can handle up to four devices at once.

Design

The Multiport Travel Charger is a surprisingly compact 4 x 2.63 x 1 inch (10.16 x 6.68 x 2.54 cm) Space Gray and black box with rounded edges, a 3.94 foot (1.2 meter) two-prong power cable, and a weight of 11.14 ounces (315.81 grams). That power cable plugs into the back of the unit, and the two-prong standard US plug can be used with international plug adapters (not included) for use on power systems around the world (100 to 240 V). The power cable comes with an attached Velcro™ strap for neatly wrapping it up.

The front of the device has four different output ports:

• One USB-C PD port: 60W maximum output, 5V3A, 9V3A, 18V3A, or 20V3A
• One Qualcomm QuickCharge 3.0 port (USB): 3.6 to 6V at 3A, 6V to 9V at 2A, 9V to 12V at 1.5A
• Two USB ports: 5V at 2.4A

A bright blue LED indicates when the device is in use. One design detail I found to be handy was that the LED has its own ambient light detector, so in bright lighting conditions the LED shines brighter while in dark conditions it is less bright. 

Function

Unless you have devices that support Qualcomm Quick Charge 3,0, you’ll find that most of your devices will plug into the USB-C or “regular” USB 3.0 ports. I found that attempting to charge a non QC 3.0 device (an iPad Pro) did not work; plugging that same device into one of the 5V 2.4A USB ports worked just find. 

Another fast way to charge recent Apple devices is to use a USB-C to Lightning cable. I tried this with both the iPad Pro and an iPhone X and found it to work quite well at speedily charging the devices. 

The USB-C port also works well if you wish to charge your MacBook or MacBook Pro with a USB-C to USB-C cable at the same time you’re charging other devices.

With a 75W maximum power rating, you can be assured that all of your devices from the MacBook Pro to your iPhone are going to be charged at their maximum rate. If you have devices that support Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0, you’re really going to love the Multiport Travel Charger as they’ll get more than just the regular old 5V at 2A that is supplied by “regular” USB ports. Otherwise, you’re going to “lose” a port as some devices will refuse to charge from the QC port.

Conclusion

Satechi has produced a nice looking, compact, and powerful charger that will please most any traveler. I highly recommend getting a USB-C to Lightning cable for fast charging of your iOS devices. You may wish to consider another travel charger without the QC 3.0 port if you do not have devices that would benefit from Quick Charge 3.0.
