Reality: Apple files trademarks for AR/VR headset

Apple’s long-awaited AR/VR headset plans are a bit clearer today, thanks to an article by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. According to the pundit, Apple has filed for the trademarks “Reality One“, “Reality Pro“, and “Reality Processor” in the US, EU, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Costa Rica and Uruguay.

Gurman outlined how Apple has masked the fact that it’s the company behind the trademark filings. Apple used law firms and shell companies around the world it has used in the past for similar trademark work.

Apple’s plans aren’t clear at this point, but the headset should debut in early 2023. The product line would be the first new category since the Apple Watch appeared seven years ago. Apple is targeting Meta Corp’s current domination of the VR category with the new products.

Similar trademarks were filed for “realityOS“, the anticipated operating system for the new products. The first headset code-named N301 will be one of the most capable VR headsets in the world when it is released. It will also be more expensive than competing products.

The device is called “Reality” within Apple, lending further credence to the recent filings. Follow-on models including the more powerful N602 and lightweight AR “glasses” with the code-name N421 aren’t expect for several years.
