Prepare Apple TV for use in the classroom

An Apple TV can be a fantastic classroom tool, as long as you tweak the settings just right. Tony Vincent explains exactly how — and much more — in this terrific post at Learning in Hand.

He begins with a description of AirPlay, and then has a slew of configuration settings to review, including:

  • Disabling movie poster thumbnails
  • Re-arranging channels
  • Hiding unwanted channels

He also goes on to describe how to use the Apple TV as a bulletin board for students, enable conference display mode, use a keyboard, security concerns and more.

The only thing I would add is instructions on enabling closed captions. Close captions can help not only deaf students, but also students who have language barriers.

This is one of those articles that inspires such jealousy in me; “I wish I had written that!” It’s very well done. Check it out
