OpenAI-Apple partnership likely to be a ‘short- to medium-term’ relationship

The OpenAI partnership is likely a “short- to medium-term relationship” for Apple, Dag Kittlaus, a tech veteran who co-founded and ran the Siri business before it was acquired by Apple, tells Bloomberg. “But you can bet that they will be working hard building out their own competencies here.”

On May 30, it was reported that Apple had finalized a deal with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT functionality into iOS 18 and other operating systems, according to The Information.

The two companies have reportedly been finalizing terms for a pact to use ChatGPT features for some time. OpenAI is a U.S. based AI research organization founded in December 2015, researching artificial intelligence with the goal of developing “safe and beneficial” artificial general intelligence, which it defines as “highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work.”

Apple is expected to unveil its artificial intelligence plans at the upcoming Worldwide Developer Conference. WWDC 2024 kicks off on Monday, June 10.
