News round-up: The Apple-Qualcomm battle began today in earnest (and more)

Since Steve and I can’t cover everything, at the end of each week day, we’ll offer this wrap-up of news items you should check out.

Today it begins in earnest. Apple and its allies have kicked off a jury trial against chip supplier Qualcomm Inc in San Diego, alleging that Qualcomm engaged in illegal patent licensing practices and seeking up to $27 billion in damages.

As announced in February, Angela Ahrendts, the company’s senior vice president of Retail, is bidding adieu to the company. After five years leading the company’s retail and online stores, she’s departing as of today for “new personal and professional pursuits.”

Five participating publishers Digiday spoke to detailed a series of “early headaches,” including struggles with Apple News+ article formatting, confusion about user experience and design, worries about jeopardizing big digital ad campaigns, and a gripe that Apple is favoring large publishers at the expense of smaller ones.

Having an iPhone doesn’t stop Google handing over your data to the police, according to a New York Times investigation.

Terry Gou, the billionaire founder and chairman of iPhone assembler Foxconn Technology Group, plans to step back from day-to-day operations, making room for younger management to run the world’s largest electronics contract manufacturer, according to the South China Post.

Speaking of Foxconn, Gou has confirmed that mass production of the iPhone will start soon in India.
