New York City’s transit system is finally replacing the MetroCard with the ability for passengers to pay with mobile payment systems such as Apple Pay.
The MetroCard is the payment method for the New York City Subway and New York City Transit buses. It was launched in 1992. In 2017, a committee of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority approved an US$573 million contract for a new fare payment system adapted from the one in use for several years on the London Underground and London’s commuter railroads.
The New York installation has now been completed network-wide, according to an OMNY announcement. OMNY is a contactless fare payment system, currently being implemented for use on public transit in New York City and the surrounding area.
