Mac’s global marketshare slips in the third quarter year-over-year, but grows slightly in the U.S.

Apple’s Mac now has a 7.5% of the global PC [as in personal computer, not just Windows systems] market and 14.8% of the U.S. market on sales of 5.1 million Macs in the third quarter of 2019, according to the Gartner research group. 

The company is now in fourth place among both global PC vendors (behind Lenovo, HP, and Dell) and U.S. PC vendors (behind HP, Dell, and Lenovo). According to Gartner, the Mac’s global marketshare shrank 3.7% year-over-year in quarter three globally, but grew 0.2% in the U.S.

However, IDC says Apple has 6.3% of the global market on sales of 5 million Macs in the third quarter of 2019. That’s down 6.1% year-over-year, per the research group. IDC has the Mac in fourth place among worldwide PC vendors (behind Lenovo, HP, and Dell). IDC’s info doesn’t list U.S. specific data.

IDC says that Apple refreshed its MacBook Air and MacBook Pro and benefited from the back-to-school season to achieve 21% growth over the second quarter of 2019. However, “overall the company still struggled to maintain positive momentum on a year-over-year basis as it continued to face supply constraints,” the research group adds.

Note that neither Gartner nor IDC count tablets such as the iPad among their estimates.

Worldwide PC shipments showed a modest increase with 1.1% growth in the third quarter of 2019, according to preliminary results by Gartner. IDC says worldwide shipments of traditional PCs, comprised of desktops, notebooks, and workstations, reached 70.4 million units in the third quarter of 2019
