iPhone 16 Pro rumored to be bigger to offer room for a periscope lens

Forgot iPhone 15 rumors; let’s look at speculation about 2024’s iPhone 16 line-up. On his Medium blog, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the iPhone 16 Pro will be slightly bigger than previous Pro models, allowing Apple room to add a periscope lens.

Periscope lenses allow for greater optical zoom by bouncing light inside the phone off a mirror before passing it through another smaller lens which can be moved closer and further away from the sensor, amplifying the light even more.

The iPhone 16 line-up almost certainly won’t roll out until fall of 2024. Display industry analyst Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants says 2024’s iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models will sport “around” 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch display sizes (give or take a decimal point or two).

If true, the iPhones would have the biggest displays ever. The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are equipped with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays, respectively, and these sizes are not expected to change with the iPhone 15 Pro models launching later this year.

Regarding the iPhone 16, rumors say that it will pack under-display Face ID technology and haptic buttons. The latter feature was once anticipated for some models of the iPhone 15, but has reportedly been delayed until 2024.
