IonSlim 5K is a skinny, powerful portable battery

Apple once got a lot of (deserved) flack for an iMac ad that said, “you can’t be too thin or too powerful.” But thin is in when it comes to Moshi’s IonSlim 5K, the newest portable battery in the company’s line.

Described as “ultra-thin,” it boasts both a USB-C and USB-A port for universal compatibility. Moshi says it’s the thinnest 5K battery on the market. I haven’t verified that, but it does easily fit in a pocket (it’s (8.5mm thin and weighs 5.04 ounces).

That said, the company did sacrifice integrated cables for its slim size. However, it comes with a reversible USB-C to USB-A cable that can be used to charge both a USB-C phone as well as IonSlim itself.

That’s part of the conundrum. If you’re an iPhone user, you’ll need a Lightning cord. Once you supply that, you can fully re-charge an iPhone 7 Plus (like mine) in just over two hours. Only one port can be used at a time to charge a device, but you can charge the battery pack using USB-C while charging another device via USB-A.

The IonSlim — which looks cool thanks to its anodized aluminum casing — uses the latest in lithium-polymer technology to pack a capacity of 5,150 mAh into its teeny form factor design. Which means it is thin and powerful.

Too bad it doesn’t sport a Lightning port.
