iFixIt: a ‘whole bunch’ of iPhone 6 and 6 Pluses are losing touch functionality

According to the folks at iFixIt, repair experts from all over the world are reporting a widespread problem killing iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus devices: an unresponsive touchscreen and a gray, flickering bar at the top of the display.

Even though the “Touch Disease” issue manifests in the display and touchscreen, replacing those components won’t fix the problem. The gray bar eventually shows up on the new screen, because the problem isn’t actually the screen at all. It’s the two touchscreen controller chips on the logic board inside the phone.

There are pages of complaints on Apple’s support forums on this issue, but at this point it appears that Apple doesn’t have a fix for the problem—aside from selling owners another phone.

iFixIt says Apple’s in-store repair techs aren’t equipped to make repairs to the logic board. Reportedly, third-party, “unauthorized” microsoldering specialists are able to replace the damaged chips.  Go to the iFixIt blog for a detailed analysis of the problem.
