iCloud monthly rates now lower: $10/month for 1TB

One of the things I was most happy to hear during today’s Apple event was also something that was just glossed over very quickly — new, lower pricing for iCloud.

It’s always irritated the #($)#@(( out of me that iCloud was so expensive, when I was paying just a mere pittance for 1TB over at Dropbox ($9.99/month). As a result, I put a lot of files over on Dropbox — but nowhere near that 1TB total — and not so much into iCloud, where a mere 200GB was costing me $3.99/month.

The new iCloud plans are actually quite nice. To begin with, if you use up to 5GB of cloud storage, it’s still free. But here’s where things get better:

  • 50GB is $0.99/month. Formerly, you got 20GB for a buck a month.
  • 200GB is $2.99/month. That used to be $3.99/month.
  • 1TB is $9.99/month. Previously, Apple charged a ridiculous $19.99 per month.

As of this evening, the old pricing is still in effect. If I were to venture a guess, I’d say that Apple will change the pricing concurrently with the release of iOS 9 next week. We have a request in to Apple for clarification.

I’ll be honest with you; at the same monthly rate for 1TB of storage, iCloud looks a lot more attractive to me now. How about you? Do the advanced sharing options that Dropbox provides make it your favorite cloud storage company? Or would you like to be able to get rid of one more app on all of your devices by using Apple’s built-in cloud storage solution? Let us know in the comments.
