Here are the features I want to see in the next major update of the MacBook Pro

I’m a big fan of the 16-inch MacBook Pro. I use it every day, including postings on Apple World Today when I’m on vacation (yep, that’s how I have to roll as a mostly one-man show). 

The laptop is fantastic, but it’s still not the ultimate tool I want it to be. Some of the features I want can be found in this must-read article by Roman Loyola at Macworld dubbed “5 iPhone 15 Pro features that need to come to the Mac.” Read the piece for details, but here are the five requested features for the Mac:

° Replacing the aluminum case with titanium.

° Apple bragged about its redesigned, 6-core GPU in the iPhone 15 Pro’s A17 Pro chip, and that it has the “fastest ray-tracing performance in a smartphone.” Bring this ability to the Mac.

° The iPhone 15 Pro can charge other devices with its USB-C port. Let’s make this an easy-to-use feature on a Mac.

° Add the second-generation ultra-wideband (UWB) chip in the iPhone 15 Pro that enables it to do more precise finding of devices.

° Upgrade the 1080p FaceTime camera to a 12MP TrueDepth camera.

I’d love to see all these features in a 2024 MacBook Pro, as well as built-in Face ID and an OLED display. However, I really want a Mac laptop with a cellular option. Various iPad models have various cellar options, so why not Mac laptops with built-in 5G? 

It’s possible (though I’m very doubtful) that, we’ll get a Mac laptop with an OLED touchscreen display. A January 11 Bloomberg report said the tech giant has was planning just such a device for 2025.

The MacBook Pro revamp being tested inside Apple purportedly keeps a “traditional laptop design” that also includes a standard trackpad and keyboard. However, the display would “support touch input and gestures – just like an iPhone and iPad.”

If the company decides to move forward with launching touchscreen Macs, Gurman says that the tech could eventually expand to other Mac models. However, he adds that Apple “isn’t actively working to combine the iPad and Mac operating systems.” 

If we’re really lucky, an OLED laptop (touchscreen or not) would also support 5G. This would be a logical step for Apple as it’s yet to introduce any sort of cellular capability for its Mac laptop line.
