Don’t expect to see any previews of the ‘Apple Glasses’ at the ‘Far out’ event

This is my (mostly) weekly column in which I discuss whatever’s on my mind Sometimes it will have nothing to do with Apple. This week it does.

Apple will hold a special media event on Wednesday, September 7, at 10 a.m. (Pacific) in the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California. Dubbed “Far out,” the shindig will almost certainly see the premiere of the iPhone 14 line-up, the Apple Watch Series 8, and the AirPods Pro 2.

Some folks are hoping we’ll get a peek at the rumored “Apple Glasses,” an augmented reality/mixed reality headset. The Sellers Research Group (that’s me) says this won’t happen.

I hope I”m wrong, and I could be. For example, Jeff Butts at The Mac Observer thinks we might get a peek.

Here’s his reasoning: Cupertino’s been hard at work on the MR headset, and supposedly gave a demo of the product recently to Apple’s board of directors. I highly doubt the new device is completely “ready for launch” (another possible Easter egg, taken from Apple’s tweet announcing the event.) That being said, the tech giant might be ready to tell us about it.

There is precedent here. When the tech giant first announced the Apple Watch, the wearable wasn’t ready to ship yet. In fact, we learned some of the details about the smartwatch in the fall of 2014, but couldn’t get our hands on it until the following spring.

Jeff’s reasoning makes sense. However, my gut tells me that we’re not going to get any peeks at “Apple Glasses” until early 2023.

Have a great weekend.
