Brazil’s Procon-SP: Apple must inform customers about the iPhone battery replacement program

A state agency in Sao Paulo Brazi says that Apple must notify consumers about its iPhone battery replacement program, reports Business Insider.

The move relates to Apple’s decision to lower the price of iPhone battery replacements following reports that the company reduced the performance of iPhones with older batteries for performance reasons. The Brazilian agency, called Procon-SP, has the power to levy fines or propose legal actions for companies that harm consumers.

Apple has published an apology letter to customers in regards to “Batterygate” for slowing down older phones to compensate for erratic battery performance. The tech giant is offering $29 replacement batteries for those with an iPhone 6 or later. The discount, which represents a $50 savings, starts in late January and ends in December 2018. Apple will also add more battery health information to iOS to let users know when the battery begins to compromise performance.
