Apple is alerting customers that support for “Back to My Mac” is ending with macOS Mojave.
Currently, if you have an iCloud account, you can use Back to My Mac to connect to your other Macs over the Internet. You can use Screen Sharing to control the remote computer from anywhere you are connected to the Internet.
You can also share files between computers, including files that aren’t stored in iCloud Drive (such as files in your Downloads, Movies, and Pictures folders). First you set up Back to My Mac on each computer, and then you can connect from one Mac to the others. Do the following on each computer you want to use with Back to My Mac.
In a support document, Apple recommends preparing for the demise of “Back to My Mac” now by learning about alternatives for file access, screen sharing, and remote desktop access. The company recommends three options:
Access files across your devices with iCloud Drive. When you turn on iCloud Drive, your files automatically upload to iCloud, where they’re stored and available on all of your devices. Turn on the Desktop and Documents Folders option in iCloud Drive to store them in iCloud, too. Now you have access to all of your files, on all devices, any time.
Access your other Mac with screen sharing. If you have multiple Macs, screen sharing lets you use one Mac to view and control your other Mac remotely. This means you can open, move, and close files and windows, and use apps — even if you’re in another location.
Use Apple Remote Desktop. If you have more than one Mac, Apple Remote Desktop also lets you run apps and work with files that are on your other Mac, even if you’re in another location. So if you want to run an app that’s only on your other Mac, you can.
