Australia’s attorney-general meeting with Apple this week

Australia’s Attorney-General George Brandis will meet with Apple this week in an effort to reach an agreement to allow police and intelligence agencies access to encrypted information from suspected terrorists and criminals, according to Sky News. The article says the government will be seeking voluntary cooperation as a “first preference.”

“But we will also be legislating so that we do have that coercive power if need be if we don’t get the cooperation we seek,” he told Sky New. “We will be pursuing both of these avenues.”

Apparently, the new laws would be directly modeled on the UK’s Investigatory Powers Act. It adds new surveillance powers including rules that force internet providers to keep complete records of every website that all of their customers visit.
