Apple’s share of Japan’s smartphone market drops to 39.1 percent in quarter two

Apple, the Japanese market leader, saw its share of Japan’s smartphone market, drop from 51.1 percent to 39.1 percent in the second quarter, reports MK Daily Economy, a daily newspaper based in Seoul. Meanwhile, Samsung’s share of Japan’s smartphone market hit 12%, up from 5.2 percent in the first quarter.

Samsung’s stronger results in the second quarter were due to the company’s use of “metallic glass, embedded batteries, and double-sided edges” in its phones, claims MK Daily Economy (as noted by BrightWire, a global investment newswire).

Sony came in second with 14.9% of Japan’s smartphone market, and Sharp third with 13.2% of the smartphone market. The stats based on data from the IDC market research firm IDC.
