Global personal computer (PC) shipments marked their sixth consecutive year-over-year (YoY) growth in the third quarter of 2021 at 84.2 million units, according to Counterpoint Research. And it was good news for Apple.
Mac shipments grew 11% YoY in the third quarter of 2021 riding on the replacement demand for the M1 Mac. Apple sold 7.3 million Macs during the time period compared to 6.6 in the third quarter of 2020.
This came despite the ongoing component shortages and other supply constraints, according to Counterpoint. However, the 9.3% YoY growth during the quarter implied decelerating PC shipment momentum after four consecutive quarters of double-digit YoY growth since Q3 2020. In addition, most manufacturers aren’t seeing any shrinking gap between orders (demand) and shipments (supply).
Counterpoint says that, in quarter three of 2021, the global PC supply chain remained constrained due to component shortages related to power management IC, radio frequency, audio codec and others. The research group thinks the solution won’t improve until mid-2022.
