Apple’s Mac now has 13.5% of the global PC market as sales rise 40.2% year-over-year

Declines continued for the traditional personal computer (PC) market as global shipments totaled 74.3 million units during the third quarter of 2022 (3Q22), according to preliminary results from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker. However, the Mac is proving the exception to the rule.

According to IDC, Apple sold approximately 10.1 million Macs in the this quarter of 2022 to give it 13.5% of the global PC market. That compares to sales of 7.2 million in the third quarter of 2021 and 8.2% market share. In other words, Mac sales grew 40.2% year-over-year. 

And those figures don’t include the iPad. IDC doesn’t count tablets as personal computers.

Lenovo remains the top global PC vendor with 22.7% market share in the first quarter of 2022, though its sales were down 16.1%. In second and third place (Apple is in fourth place) were HP with 17.2% market share (with sales down 21.2%) and Dell with 16.1% market share (with sales down 21.2%). Coming in at fifth place was ASUS with 7.5% market share (with sales down 7.8%). Among the top five global PC vendors, only Apple saw sales grow.

IDC says that cooling demand and uneven supply have contributed to a year-over-year PC contraction of 15.0%. However, shipment volumes remain well above pre-pandemic levels when PC volumes were largely driven by commercial refreshes due to the looming end of support for Windows 7.
