Apple’s iPhone sees global shipments rise 7.% year-over-year in quarter two

The global smartphone market grew 6.9% year-over-year (YoY), to 299.1 million units in the second quarter (2Q) of 2021, compared to the 279.7 million units shipped in 2Q 2020, according to Omdia.

Apple, in third position, saw iPhone shipments increase 7.5% YoY thanks to a recovery in demand in developed markets and an increase in demand for premium smartphones in emerging markets, adds the research group.

Samsung took the top spot, shipping 57.3 million units, up 5.6 percent YoY, compared to the 54.3 million units shipped in 1Q20, according Omdia. China-based Xiaomi reached second place in 2Q21, shipping 49.9 million units. That’s up 72.9% compared to 2Q20.
