Apple will reportedly halve its iPhone X production target to 20 million units

Apple will halve its iPhone X production target to 20 million units for the first quarter of calendar year 2018, according to Nikkei Asian Review sources.. The drop reportedly follows lower-than-expected holiday sales for the premium iPhone.

Apple’s total production target for the lower priced models (iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and 7) is expected to stay at 30 million units. On a related note, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says in notes to clients that Apple’s expected 6.1-inch LCD iPhone will be a huge hit with consumers, offering capabilities of the iPhone X at a lower price point.

“We are positive on the shipments outlook of the 6.1″ LCD iPhone, and forecast it will have a weighting of around 50% in the new models in 2H18,” he wrote. “Since the specs of the 6.1″ LCD iPhone will not match up to those of the OLED models, we believe the supply chain investment themes for the new 6.1″ LCD iPhone will more likely center around ‘new entrants’ and ‘market share gainers,’ rather than ‘beneficiaries of spec upgrades ‘ or ‘beneficiaries of ASP increase.'”
