Apple will purportedly diversify its MacBook production in China

According to DigiTimes Research, Apple is expected to diversify its MacBook production in China “to avoid placing all the eggs in one basket.”

The COVID lockdowns in eastern Chinese cities severely disrupted Apple’s shipments in the second quarter of 2022. Quanta Computer, which manufactures around 60% of Apple’s MacBooks at its plant in Shanghai, is expected to shift some of the production to its plant in Chongqing, western China, according to DigiTimes Research.

Quanta produces the 14.2- and 16.2-inch MacBook Pro and the 13.3-inch and 13.6-inch MacBook Air for Apple.

Foxconn Technology Group assembles the 13.3-inch MacBook Pro as well as the 13.3-inch MacBook Air and handles the remaining 40% of Mac laptop production. DigiTimes Research says that, in the second half of 2022, Apple will gradually shift orders for the 13.3-inch MacBook Air from the two manufacturers to China-based Wingtech, which will manufacture the devices at its plant in Kunming, southwestern China. Th research group says Apple is looking to have Wingtech making 5% of its MacBook products in 2022 and 10% in 2023, Hsiao estimates.
