Apple wants you to be able to buy gas directly from CarPlay

Honda is now offering a dealer-installed feature upgrade that enables wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality in approximately 631,000 Accord models.

Apple wants you to start buying gas directly from your car dashboard as early as this fall, when the newest version of its CarPlay software rolls out, “accelerating the company’s push to turn your vehicle into a store for goods and services,” according to Reuters.

For this to work, companies such as the Dallas-based HF Sinclair gasoline firm will offer individual apps that you’ll install on your  iPhone to be available in CarPlay‌. Enter payment credentials in the ‌iPhone‌ app ahead of time and you’ll be able to activate a pump and purchase fuel directly from CarPlay.

At this year’s Worldwide Developer Conference, Apple previewed the next generation of CarPlay, which more deeply integrates with a car’s hardware.

CarPlay will now be able to provide content for multiple screens within the vehicle. Apple says that deeper integration with the vehicle will allow users to do things like control the radio or change the climate directly through CarPlay, and using the vehicle data, CarPlay will render the speed, fuel level, temperature, and more on the instrument cluster.

Users will be able to personalize their driving experience by choosing different gauge cluster designs, and with added support for widgets, users will have at-a-glance information from Weather and Music right on their car’s dashboard. Apple says more information about the next generation of CarPlay will be shared in the future, and vehicles will start to be announced late next year.
