Apple updates iPod touch line: 64-bit, 8MP camera, up to 128GB storage

Apple surprised nobody today by updating the iPod touch line. As we reported late last week, an iPod update was widely expected yesterday, but apparently the company chose to make fools of all Apple bloggers. While the changes to the iPod nano and iPod shuffle were strictly cosmetic — they now match the revised colors for the iPod touch — the internals of the iPod touch were definitely given an update.

The new iPod touch uses the 64-bit A8 microprocessor, and there’s an M8 motion coprocessor built in as well. The rear camera has a full 8 megapixel resolution, and the device is available in capacities of 16, 32, 64 and an all-new 128GB. The 16GB model is just US$199, with the 32GB weighing in at $249, 64GB at $299, and 128GB at $399.

The devices ship with iOS 8.4 and Apple Music, making it possible for the new iPod touch to stream Apple Music for just $9.99 per month. Other improvements have been made to Wi-Fi speeds (apparently up to three times faster now) and to the forward-facing FaceTim HD camera.

The new colors include gold, hot pink and a new darker blue. All of the new iPod touch models are available for order on Apple’s online store.
