Apple spends record amount in Washington lobbying efforts

Apple spent $2.2 million lobbying the Donald Trump administration in Washington D.C. between April 1 and June 30, 2017, according to a disclosure form filed by the Office of the Clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives — as noted by recode. That’s almost double the moolah spent on lobbying from the same three month period in 2016.

In its filing, Apple explicitly called attention to its work around immigration. That’s an issue that mattered so much to Apple CEO Tim Cook that he confronted Trump directly about it during a private reception at the White House in June.

However, Apple isn’t the only tech company spending big money on lobbying.

Google spent about $5.4 million and joined Apple in surveillance concerns but also lobbied about self-driving car regulations that could apply to its spin-off Waymo. Facebook spent $2.3 million to fight against potentiallegislation that would limit how the company collects user data for ad sales.
