Apple is talking with Google about integrating its Gemini AI engine into the iPhone as part of iOS 18, “setting the stage for a blockbuster agreement that would shake up the AI industry,” according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.
According to Google, Gemini is the first model to outperform human experts on MMLU (Massive Multitask Language Understanding), one of the most popular methods to test the knowledge and problem solving abilities of AI models.
Gurman adds that Apple also recently held discussions with OpenAI and has considered using its model. OpenAI is a U.S. based AI research organization founded in December 2015, researching artificial intelligence with the goal of developing “safe and beneficial” artificial general intelligence, which it defines as “highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work.”
According to previous reporting by Gurman, Apple has been internally testing an “Apple GPT” rival that could compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. He adds that the company has also been designing an “Ajax” framework for large language model,
