Apple rehires cryptography expert Jon Callas

Apple has hired — no, make that rehired — Jon Callas, an expert in practical cryptography with the goal “to bring more powerful security features to a wide range of consumer products,” reports Reuters.

Callas, who co-founded several well-respected secure communications companies including PGP Corp, Silent Circle and Blackphone, rejoined Apple in May, the article adds. He had worked at Apple in the 1990s and again between 2009 and 2011, when he designed an encryption system to protect data stored on a Mac. Apple declined to detail his new role, and Callas declined to comment.

Callas is credited with creating several Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standards, including OpenPGP, DKIM, and ZRTP, which he wrote. Prior to his work at Entrust as chief technical officer, he was chief technical officer and co-founder of PGP Corporation. He describes himself as “an entrepreneur and innovator in information and business security, including cryptography, operating system security, public key infrastructure, and intellectual property rights,” as well as “an innovator in human-computer interactions, collaboration and social virtual reality.
