Apple purportedly developing a next-gen battery for its products

Apple is developing a next-generation battery with the goal of releasing it in products after 2025, according to ET News

The article says the tech giant is looking into using alternative cathode materials “that will enhance the overall performance of the battery module, with an aim to increase the effective battery life of its future products.” ET News says Apple is actively looking at using more silicon content inside the battery, rather than graphite. Apparently, the company thinks a silicon-based approach would improve overall battery capacity and shorten charging times.

This isn’t the first rumor that Apple is developing its own batteries. In 2019, Bloomberg reported that Apple had hired Soonho Ahn, a former Samsung executive who worked primarily on lithium-ion batteries and other battery-related technologies.

“Apple is [also] in talks to buy cobalt ‘directly from miners’—cobalt is needed to make these kinds of batteries,” the article said. “Both revelations suggest that Apple may be looking to make its own batteries rather than source them from other companies.”
