Apple, Intel engineers reportedly working on 5G tech for next gen iPhones

Apple is seriously eyeing Intel’s version of of 5G for a future iPhone, reports Fast Company, quoting an unnamed “source with knowledge.”

The article say engineers from the two companies have been working on 5G, the upcoming tech for next-generation wireless broadband. That makes sense considering Apple’s ongoing legal battle with Qualcomm, the the world’s dominant supplier of baseband processors. The 5G technology standard is under development as the Internet of Things and an increasing number of mobile users create demand for next-generation wireless infrastructure.

Qualcomm’s 5G modem chips offer more specialized carrier features, but Fast Company says many won’t be widely adopted by carriers. Apple engineers believe that Intel’s 5G modem will fit its requirements for a future iPhone, the article adds.

Apple has applied for a patent for an “electronic device having antenna tuning integrated circuits with sensors.” It would allow 5G network implementation in future iPhones and iPads.
