Apple has acquired Canadian artificial intelligence startup DarwinAI, “adding technology to its arsenal ahead of a big push into generative AI in 2024,” reports Bloomberg.
In his latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple has “dramatically” slowed its pace in acquiring other companies over the past two years.
He says corporate acquisitions have slowed to a “trickle.” Gurman notes that regulatory filings show that Apple spent US$33 million on payments related to acquisitions during the last fiscal year and $169 million in the first nine months of the current fiscal year. This is down from $1.5 billion in the fiscal year of 2020. Apple previously acquired a company every three to four weeks.
