Apple ‘dramatically increases’ amount of user data stored in Google’s cloud

Apple has “dramatically increased” the amount of user data it stores in Google’s cloud, reports The Information. The article says the increase cements Apple’s status as the largest corporate client for Google’s storage service.

As of mid-May, Apple was on track to spend aroundUS $300 million on Google Cloud storage this year, says The Information. This would represent an increase of roughly 50% from all of 2020.

Why isn’t Apple utilizing more of its own cloud facilities? The Information thinks the tech giant’s cloud storage needs are rising faster than it can deploy on its own infrastructure.

In 2018, Apple confirmed that it replies on Google’s public cloud for data storage for its iCloud services. Apple said that “the encrypted chunks of the file are stored, without any user-identifying information, using third-party storage services, such as [Amazon] S3 and Google Cloud Platform.”
