Apple Daily Report for August 22, 2017

The AWT News Update is on hiatus while my compadre, Steve, is on a road trip. In its place, I’ll offer a text-only (no podcast) summary of breaking stories with a tip o’ my hat to my former website, Apple Daily Report.

Verizon Wireless is changing its unlimited plan by splitting it into multiple tiers. At the same time the carrier is preparing to throttle the quality of streaming video for all customers, including those staying on the existing unlimited plan. (Hmmm, if a plan has a limit, how can be it “unlimited”?)

iHelp BR has some more information on the setup process for Apple’s upcoming HomePod (due in December). When HomePod is first powered on, users will be prompted to pair the device with their iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. While there will hopefully be Mac and Apple TV functionality as well, that may come via iCloud after first pairing an iOS device.

Code42, the company behind CrashPlan has announced that they’re pulling out of the consumer market. CrashPlan for Home users will have to begin migrating away from the service as it will no longer be available starting in October 2018.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has tweeted his thoughts for those lost on the USS John S. McCain. Ten sailors went missing in the aftermath of a collision between the USS John S. McCain and a Greek-owned tanker.

In a new report, KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says Apple’s 3D sensing technology is significantly ahead of technology available to Android devices using Qualcomm’s offering. He says Qualcomm won’t be able to make significant shipments of its own 3D sensing technology until 2019, a long time after Apple’s introduction of the iPhone 8, which is expected to be unveiled next month.
