Apple Daily Report: ‘CookieMiner’ cryptocurrency-stealing malware discovered (and more news)

Since Steve and I can’t cover everything, at the end of each week day, we’ll offer this wrap-up of news items you should check out. 

TNW reports that ecurity researchers from Palo Alto Networks’ Unit 42 have identified a new cryptocurrency stealing malware. What has been dubbed as “CookieMiner,” specifically targets Mac users and the cookies related to their logon credentials for cryptocurrency exchanges like Coinbase, Binance, Poloniex, Bittrex, Bitstamp, and MyEtherWallet.

Taiwanese manufacturer Compal Electronics will likely be a supplier of the next generation of the iPad mini when the tablet debuts later this year, according to DigiTimes

Australia — Permission has been sought to demolish Federation Square’s Yarra Building to make way for a controversial new Apple store, sparking accusations the process is being rushed to avoid scrutiny, reports The Melbourne Age . The square’s management has applied for a heritage permit to knock down part of the large postmodern building, arguing in a 124-page impact statement that it is not of the same design standard as others in the precinct.

Apple is once more selling the iPhone SE on clearance in the U.S., It’s the third time this month, the discontinued smartphone has made a comeback on the Apple store.

Apple will be re-open its flagship Fifth Avenue store in New York City in the first half of 2019, the management of the company that owns the property says —-with the famous “glass cube” store expected to complete its renovations within the next six months. 

The Ultraviolet DVD service, which let people store purchases movies in the cloud, is shutting down July 31.
