Apple buys French computer vision startup Regaind

Apple is always looking to acquire companies that are developing technologies that can be used in future products. TechCrunch is reporting that Apple has acquired a French computer vision startup called Regaind, which has apparently been developing a computer vision API for the analysis of photo content.

As TechCrunch’s Romain Dillet explains, “Regaind goes one step further (than Photos) and can tell you the technical and aesthetical values of your photos. For instance, if you shoot a bunch of photos in burst mode, Regaind could automatically find the best shot and use it as the main shot in your photo library. Regaind could also hide duplicates.”

The technology could improve Photos “Memories”, create recap videos with only the best shots, and use the best possible photo as cover art. Dillet notes that Regaind analyzes faces to determine gender, age and emotion, and he wonders if Apple had enough time to use that technology for animoji expressions with the Face ID sensor in the iPhone X.
