Apple books initiation production of 4nm successor to the M1 chip

Apple has booked the initial production capacity of 4nm chips with its manufacturing partner TSMC for its next-generation Apple silicon chips (the successor to the M1), according to DigiTimes. The most likely recipient of the chips are upcoming MacBook Pros and, depending on when they’re released, new iMacs.

DigiTimes says TSMC will move to volume production of the new process to the fourth quarter of the year. That’s ahead of the previously mentioned 2022 timeframe. If the report is wrong about the timetable being moved up, the 4nm chips might not arrive in new Macs until next year.

The next generation of MacBook Pros are expected to come in 14-inch and 16-inch versions with mini-LED displays. They’re also expected to get a major design overhaul.

Also due for a design overhaul are the first M1 iMacs. They’re predicted to debut in 24-inch and 27-inch (or perhaps) larger sizes.
