Analyst: Apple spending money on robotics will be a ’black eye’ moment for the company

In a note to clients — as noted by iMore — Wedbush analyst Dan Ives says Apple spending money on robotics would be a “black eye” moment for the company.

Arguing that artificial intelligence (AI) will be Tim Cook’s legacy, he also said that Apple would be a “horror show” if it tried to spend money on developing robots the likes of which it is tipped to have already turned to. The analyst pointed  at the Apple Car debacle as a reason that Apple should instead focus its efforts on what he calls the “AI revolution.”

After abandoning its Apple Car project, Apple now has teams investigating a push into personal robotics, a field with the potential to become one of the company’s ever-shifting “next big things,”Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported on April 3.

Engineers at Apple have purportedly been exploring a mobile robot that can follow users around their homes, he said. The tech giant has also has developed an advanced table-top home device that uses robotics to move a display around, Gurman added.
